brusselsJune10On 10-11 June 2010, the EU for the very first time organized a two day high-level event on global health. The central office of the European Commission, the Berlaymont building, was decorated for all to see, with a poster for the conference running down nearly the full height of its 18 floors in the heart of Brussels' EU quarter. Never has the EU's commitment to its global health responsibilities been so boldly displayed. The EU's commitment to global health was reinforced in the conference opening by EU Commissioner for Public Health John Dalli, presence of European Commission director generals for public health, development and research, and again in speeches from Margaret Chan, Director General of the World Health Organization, Bience Gawanas, African Union Commissioner for Social Affairs, and David Chiriboga, Minister for Health, Ecuador.

World Economic Forum looks at redesigning global health governance PDF Print E-mail

In what is being called a "marketplace for ideas" the World Economic Forum has convened a meeting of decision makers and opinion leaders from the communities of policy, business and civil society in Doha to discuss how to improve international cooperation. The event "The Global Redesign Summit" looks at issues ranging from building institutions for an empowered society and creating a global values framework, to looking at security, managing global risks and ensuring health for all. On 31 May there was a session dedicated specifically to global health governance.

WHA_side_event_011v2Delegates and observers at the 63rd World Health Assembly gathered today at the UN in Geneva for a side-event organized by the Spanish Presidency of the EU, the European Commission and Global Health Europe. Reaching out to a broader community of global health stakeholders, the event brought together experts from Brazil, Thailand and South Africa with experts from the EU, the World Health Organization and Global Health Europe to discuss the challenges and opportunities for improved collaboration between the EU and other regions for global health.

NF_Event_ReportThe Swedish Presidency of the European Union convened a meeting of high level European global health stakeholders in Stockholm on Friday, 4 December 2009. The meeting was co-organised by the Karolinska Institutet and Global Health Europe. The seminar came at a crucial moment for European engagement in global health; its objective being to give feedback into the European Commission's present work toward a new EU policy on Global Health.
