The export of toxic waste to Adibjan from Amsterdam in 2006 resulted in thousands of people in the Ivory Coast falling ill.

Trafigura, the European privately owned mutinational had previously fought a legal battle to prevent the media from publishing news of a scientific study into the impact of the dumping of the waste. A Dutch court today found the company guilty of illegally exporting the toxic waste and imposed a fine of 1 million Euros. But what would the fine have been if the toxic waste had been dumped in Spain or the US?
