Roll-out of new meningitis vaccine for sub-Saharan Africa.

08 December 2010

Health officials are set to roll-out a new meningitis vaccine for sub-Saharan Africa's "meningitis belt". The new vaccine, which has been developed in India, costs less the fifty US cents a dose and clinical tests suggest it could offer protection for between 10 and 15 years.

This news come just days after the conclusion of the 2010 EU Development days where experts discussed the need for better partnerships for health - especially so-called "South-South" cooperation. The new vaccine provides an example of the potential of middle-income countries for innovation for global health.
