New malaria vaccine on trial but funds are running low

The second "Malaria Vaccines for the World" conference met on the 28-30 September in Washington. It focussed on the RTS, a promising vaccine against the deadliest strain of the disease for which trial data should be available by 2012.

But meanwhile a study undertaken by European and African experts, funded by the Wellcome Trust, has shown that there may be a 60% shortfall in funding for malaria and 50 countries including 10 in Africa and 5 in Asia may have insufficient funds to maintain and extend their prevention and treatment programmes. 

As always in such cases the development of prevention and treatment programmes are only part of the answer. Health system strengthening and funding must  go hand in hand with technical developments.
